This is the next winning entry from the Sony World Photography contest for 2011.  Taken in Indonesia, photographer Chan Kwok Hung explains that this action photograph was shot during the annual buffalo race held at the beginning of the farming season.  It is believed that a winning buffalo will bring the farmer good luck during that year’s season.

Over 51,000 photographers from 148 countries submitted their work to the 2011 Sony World Photography Open contest.  But only 10 of these amateur photographers were picked by a panel of distinguished judges as the winners.  The photographers represent every corner of the globe and their photographs represent 10 different categories from action to architecture to travel to people and more.  The 10 winning photographs will be exhibited at the World Photography Festival at London’s Somerset House from 26 April – 22 May.  Each winning photograph will also be published  in the Winner’s Book and each photographer will receive Sony DSLR camera equipment (a great prize in the opinion of a Sony Alpha user).  In addition, one of the ten will be selected as the Open Photographer of the Year and receive a $5000 cash prize.

The winners and their categories are:

Action: Chan Kwok Hung (Hong Kong)
After Dark: Chumlong Nilkon (Thailand)
Architecture: Marek Troszczynski (Poland)
Arts & Culture: Hubert Januar (Indonesia)
Fashion: Edina Csoboth (Hungary)
Nature & Wildlife: Andiyan Lutfi (Indonesia)
Panoramic: Wolfgang Weinhardt (Germany)
People: Raghuranjan Sarkar (India)
Smile: Carlos Henrique Reinesch (Brazil)
Travel: James Chong (Singapore)

There is some incredible talent among these ten winners.  I have posted one of my favorites here.  But because they all are so well composed and created it is too difficult to select just one.  So check back over the next few days for each of the ten winning photographs to be posted.

Photo of snow on pine needles.Although it is only going to be about 45 degrees today in Phoenix we don’t have the kind of “cold” that is easily captured in a photograph.  No snow, ice, frozen lakes or the like. So for B & H Photo’s “Cold” photography contest I will have to get a little more creative or head two hours north to the Flagstaff, Arizona area for an image like this.  This is a short 2 week contest, so for a chance at first prize, a $100 B & H Photo gift card, get your submissions in by February 14th.  They are “…looking for images depicting “cold” that are taken in any and all ways.”

Bissell, as in the floor cleaners, has announced their 4th annual Most Valuable Pet Contest.  The contest runs through April 5, 2011.  Submit photos of your pet for a chance to have a $10,000 donation made to a pet charity of your choice, along with other prizes.

National Geographic has announced the winners of their 2010 Photography Contest.  The honorable mentions alone are amazing works of photography and it seems like it would have been a daunting task to pick just one as the winner.  However, they did pick one grand prize winner.  The winning shot by Aaron Lim Boon Teck is of an erupting volcano in Indonesia.

Combining travel and photography is a natural thing to do.  You can both capture the memories of your travel experiences and create great photographic art as you explore the world.  So it was only natural that Frommer’s, one of the top travel guide publishers, combined the two in their 2010 Favorite Travel Moments Photo Contest. After reviewing 4,000 entries the editors at Frommer’s narrowed it down to one first place winner and 4 runner ups.  The winning photo was this sperm whale off the coast of Dominica in the Caribbean captured by Peter Allinson.  For this prize winning image he got $4,000 and a Tamron zoom lens  See a slide show of all the winners here.

Weather can be an interesting and challenging subject to photograph.  It presents a lot of opportunities for some spectacular images.  So USA Today is offering us the chance to get some recognition for those images.  The USA Today Weather Photo Contest is running from now until November 19th with 3 cash prizes.  First prize is a $500 American Express gift card; second prize is a $300 gift card and 3rd prize gets a $200 gift card.

I’m a little late to the game here, but there is still plenty of time to enter the final contest in Tamron USA’s year long photography contest.  But first you should catch up with the winners of the last phase, Summer Rituals.  Then it is on to Fall and Winter (hard to believe already).  The last contest is titled Fall into Winter.  And as the name suggests the photographs entered should represent the Fall and Winter seasons.  That can be anything from fall leaves to Thanksgiving dinner to snow covered landscapes.
