Photo of an iron fence using a very narrow depth of field

Very Narrow
f/7.1 – 1/400 sec – ISO 100 – Focal Length 100 mm

The “Very Narrow” refers to the depth of field in this photograph of an iron fence in Tucson Arizona’s Armory Park neighborhood.  Only the second spike of the fence is in focus while everything in front of it and behind it are out of focus.

I have mentioned before my love of architectural photography (and architecture in general) and have posted 12+ pages of posts related to architectural photography at last count.  I also have a special affinity for my hometown of Tucson, AZ and my Alma Mater the University of Arizona.  So a chance to combine the three is a win-win-win situation.

The U of A recently set out to expand their student recreation center by 54,000 square feet while “shepherding student resources” (building responsibly) at the same time.  The end result is an LEED certified architectural masterpiece.  Arch Daily, aka eye candy for architecture fans, has a spread on the new rec center with architectural photography by Timmerman Photography Inc. (I want his job!).

I have not had an opportunity to photography at the U of A recently, but have the new rec center on my list of places to hone my architectural photography skills.  Stay tuned for images of the expanded recreation center at the University of Arizona.

The La Siesta Motel is a roadside motel from a time gone by.  It sits on what was once the main thoroughfare between Tucson and Phoenix.  Today it is being well maintained as a bit of a kitsch throwback to a simpler time.

f/4.0 – 1/1000 sec – ISO 100 – Focal Length 50 mm

I love the depth of field that my f/1.7 50 mm prime lens allows me to capture.  I have been using this lens almost exclusively since I bought it because it is such an excellent all purpose lens.  this particular image was taken in Tucson at St. Philips in the Hills Church.  I focused on the bougainvillea flowers in the foreground with a large aperture (4.0) giving me a shallow depth of field making the cross behind them blurred.

The Bicycle Church in Tucson’s Barrio Anita neighborhood has been touted as a public art project, a memorial to fallen bicyclists and a waste of the tax payer’s money.  The 12 foot by 12 foot structure was dedicated in August of this year.  It is constructed out of bicycle parts and painted all white.  The overall shape of the “sculpture” is of a classic church but it is much more a work of art than a religious structure.
